On the Taiwan Proper, the areas that have algal reef are Sanzhi Township of New Taipei City, coastal Taoyuan, and the east coast of the Hengchun Peninsula in Pingtung County. Taoyuan’s algal reefs are the biggest and most complete in Taiwan. They have been in existence for over 4,000 years. The ecosystem nurtures many species. In the world’s many marine ecosystems, it is considered a hot spot for biological diversity and is also one of the most important ecosystems on the northwestern coast of Taiwan. In order to retain the completeness of this precious ecosystem and its landscapes and resources, on July 7, 2014, Taoyuan City Government established the Taoyuan Guan-Xin Algal Reefs Ecosystem Wildlife Refuge, in order to protect its riverside algal reef, coastal ecosystem, and the habitats of birds, wild animals and plants.
