Being isolated and oblivious has always been the trait of island. Yet only without disturbance can the natural beauty be completely preserved. Penghu South Sea Columnar Basalt Nature Reserve is composed of four islets: Dongji, Xiji, Tojin, and Tiezhan. It holds a particularly meaningful status in natural preservation as it was the first nature reserve established following a local government’s request. Dongji and Xiji boast the magnificent columnar basalt extending toward the sky, overwhelming anyone who gazes them. Tojin, meaning headscarf in Chinese, got its name from the shape of the islet, and serves as an important breeding habitat for terns in summer.  Tiezhan, looking like a chopping board, consists of two gigantic sea stacks erecting on a wave-cut platform, making it look like a snail with two tentacles.
