Located in Yuanshan Township, Yilan County Shuanglianpi Wildlife Refuge is known as a paradise for wetland species. Formed by two connected lakes, the sanctuary covers 17 hect ares and affords one of Taiwan's most stunning lake valley vistas. Abundant rain and relative isolation have blessed the region with high levels of plant, bird and insect diversity. The Refuge protects lake, wetland, river, and forest ecosystems, and conserves the gene pools of local wetland plant species, the diversity of which is unusual even in global terms-research ers counted 112 different species, or over one third of all Taiwan's native aquatic plants, around the lake alone!
