In order to irrigation storage, Taoyuan built many ponds decades ago. Therefore, it is called “the country of thousands ponds”. Every pond has their own ecosystem, and there are lots of species and gene pools. Gaorong Wildlife Refuge is one of the example.

Originally, Gaorong pond was built for storage of the war. Nowadays, it becomes a wetland and retains abundant ecological resources. However, not only climate change, but also degradation of the environment, Two-striped grass frogs (Rana Taipehensis) decreased a lot. Therefore, the government announced Gaorong pond as wildlife refuge. As present, Gaorong pond grows a lot of protophyta.
